Whether it was by choice or chance we all made the decision to pursue medicine in Georgia. We decided to ask our seniors about their experience of having spent 6 years in Tbilisi and how that has shaped their lives so far.
It is no small accomplishment to leave behind the comfort of home and venture out to a whole different country at 18 years of age. Even though Tbilisi may have been daunting initially, the city with its charms and character has managed to win over the majority of students’ hearts. As a lot of us came here fresh out of high school, the city has played an integral role in raising and shaping us to be the adults that we are today. And of course, the friends we've made along the way have also had an immense influence on our experience here.
With its cobblestoned streets, aesthetic instagrammable cafes, trees that keep changing according to season, the city is littered with beauty and charisma wherever you look. The ever welcoming nature of the people and places here, constantly encouraging us to travel and explore is something that is very unique to student life in Georgia. The spontaneous road trips, getting lost in the metro, holding on to Google maps for dear life while exploring the city are priceless experiences. The freedom we experience here is boundless and with the right set of people by your side, living here is truly a delight. Not to mention the numerous natural landscapes the country boasts. From mountains to beaches, Georgia is rich in natural wonders and gives the opportunity for students to experience all sorts of adventures.
However with the good parts there are also the not so fun experiences most of us have faced at some point. Issues with safety and racial discrimination were some instances according to seniors that tainted their memories of living in Tbilisi. A significant number of students have experienced their fair share of encounters with theft and harassment. However, there is an overwhelming majority of students that believe that those experiences helped them grow and mature into the adults they are today. Living with the amount of independence and responsibility that we have here forces us to learn how to deal with the hardships that we face in life. Therefore, the distasteful incidents have as much of a role in shaping us into the person we become and help us appreciate the happier moments more fully.
Overall the experiences we have had living in this country for 6 years has equipped us to deal with whatever we may face in life here on after. It allowed us to grow and learn the hard taught lessons while giving enough leeway to enjoy the major chunk of our youth as well. And for me as well as the rest of the seniors, leaving here is going to be as bittersweet as it gets.
