“Seconds, minutes, hours, days, weeks, months, years, decades! Each life is a faded, lesser copy of the one before. Wake up, eat, work, sleep, reproduce, and die.”
Watching Stranger Things' latest season earlier in the year, opened my eyes after hearing this one dialogue from the season’s antagonist Vecna. Ever since then, I cannot somehow let go of the sheer truth in his words. Human existence, societal rules, and aspirations for us have all faded into one by the system we are in. I cannot help but feel an intense disdain for the life that has been laid out for me.
Human nature has transformed into human consumerism. The modern age has become a capitalistic hellhole, where every single person, company, or organization is relentlessly trying to sell you the very next best thing, trying to convince you why they are better than the other.
What started as a need for growth and bettering human lives has now transformed into a race for exploitation and profit. People are so caught up in their greed and worldly possessions that they have forgotten what it is to exist, to be human.
We get up, we go to work, school, or universities, all to one day earn a man-made currency to buy into a corrupt, man-made, and capitalistic system whose scales are always tipped against our favor. We spend every last bit of our existence, working in the very system built to consume us, which begs the question. When does this insanity end? When do we get to break free from this existential mess of life we are in?
How many more latest phones, cars, fashion, and unhealthy junk food, is it going to take us to realize that the 1% of the wealth hoarders have created and control this system, are selling us the very thing that is created from the exploitation of the people at the very bottom of the “capitalist pyramid”. Oxfam reports that from March 18, 2020, to the end of 2020, global billionaire wealth increased by $3.9 trillion. By contrast, global workers’ combined earnings fell by $3.7 trillion, according to the International Labor Organization.
Not one thing you own today or ever will own is made ethically and is always made by someone’s blood. Consumerism has consumed us to the point we do not realize how the ultra-wealthy today stands atop piles of corpses to be at their perceived pinnacle of success. How many of us will have to be sacrificed, while they and their future generations live a life of luxury with the money earned from our blood?
The faster we realize that this very system meant to consume us is built upon us, the faster we attain true freedom. We need to join hands together and realize that while one person can start the spark of revolution, it won't be enough. We must unite and set this spark ablaze to burn the system down,
